The Sol Confederation
A federated republic spanning hundreds of star systems. One government, many centers of power.
The republic among the stars
Founded in 2033, the Sol Confederation is the dominant human political entity across the Orion Arm. Its member states are joined through federal institutions, interstellar commerce and a shared communications infrastructure. Earth is the republic’s de jure capital and the source of its constitutional legitimacy; the Grand Assembly, presidency, military command and principal federal institutions conduct their daily business on Mars, the de facto political and military capital.
The Grand Assembly is composed of Senators. Every member world or qualifying installation receives exactly two seats, without population-based representation. The Assembly selects the President for one nonrenewable five-year term. CONSTRACOM operates under that civilian authority. Across hundreds of systems, these institutions must reconcile equal membership with enormous differences in population, distance and local power.
Public authority and corporate power
The Confederation’s institutions operate alongside four surviving semi-sovereign Megacorporations. Their status derives from the Interstellar Corporations Act of 2367, which originally recognized five. Corporate fleets and infrastructure extend into regions where direct federal authority is limited.
This arrangement ties the government’s reach to organizations with interests of their own. Military operations, commercial movement and territorial administration depend on cooperation across both public and corporate commands.
The published record
The CONTRA Astrocartographic Division reports 283 member states and an estimated population of 41.7 billion in its 2780 survey. Of those members, 176 are populated worlds and 107 are installations with populations of at least one million. Every member state receives the same two seats in the Grand Assembly.
Confederate control extends approximately 858 light-years from Sol. Beyond that limit, the frontier remains charted and partially patrolled, with a substantially thinner federal presence.
