A civilization in communication

GalaxyNet is the Confederation’s faster-than-light communications grid. It connects a civilization distributed across hundreds of star systems, allowing its institutions to coordinate beyond the limits of ordinary light-speed communication.

The network is administered by CONTRA. Its importance spans government, commercial activity, and military operations. It is shared infrastructure on which otherwise separate organizations depend.

Communications and navigation

GalaxyNet also supports safe navigation for Alcubierre-drive travel. The ability to move faster than light and the ability to coordinate that movement are linked capabilities.

The grid overlays the Confederation’s trade lanes and gate network. Its administration therefore carries consequences for physical movement as well as the exchange of messages.

Federal administration

Mercurius Communications created GalaxyNet and later attempted to separate its corporate-controlled worlds from the Confederation during the First and Second Secession Wars. After the second conflict, Mercurius was dissolved and the Confederation placed the network under federal administration through the institution that became CONTRA.

The detailed dates remain restricted in the public chronology. By 2780, GalaxyNet is one of the essential systems joining the republic’s dispersed member states into a functioning whole.
