CONTRA
The Confederation Technology Research Administration. Custodian of the network and the official chart of known space.
Research and administration
The Confederation Technology Research Administration, commonly designated CONTRA, occupies a central position in the Confederation’s technical infrastructure. Its predecessor was the Tech Security and Intelligence Directorate, which developed the original concept of the Inquisitor Corps. Once CONTRA was fully commissioned, it absorbed the Corps and its administration.
CONTRA’s responsibilities also include administration of GalaxyNet, the faster-than-light communications grid on which interstellar coordination depends. The Administration’s reach crosses district and corporate boundaries; communications and the official description of Confederate territory both depend on infrastructure or records under its authority.
The Astrocartographic Division
CONTRA’s Astrocartographic Division maintains the authoritative chart of known space. Its published surveys define the Limit of Control, the Frontier Zone, and the extent of explored territory. It also supplies the official figures for worlds, population, gates, fleets, shipyards, and orbital habitats.
The strategic chart is schematic rather than astrometric. It represents relationships between districts, routes, and threat directions; it is not a navigational substitute for precise system coordinates.
Reading an official record
Territorial statistics in this collection follow CONTRA’s 2780 reporting. Where a quantity is an estimate, it is identified as such. The distinction between controlled territory and explored space is essential: inclusion on a chart does not itself establish federal control.
