The Solar System, most commonly referred to as Sol, is the home star system of humanity. Its third planet, Earth, is the human homeworld and the de jure seat of power for the Sol Confederation. Its fourth planet, Mars, is the Confederation’s operating political and administrative center and the central command of the Sol Confederation Navy.

More than a birthplace, Sol is the institutional heart of human civilization. The Grand Assembly and presidency conduct most of their work on Mars; Earth remains the source of the Confederation’s legal and cultural legitimacy; Ceres and the inner-system yards sustain naval construction; and the inhabited moons of Jupiter and Saturn form an immense military-industrial network.

The system is protected by the 20th Fleet, planetary fortifications, fixed weapons complexes, and ODIN—a distributed strategic-defense intelligence whose named sub-minds watch approaches from Mercury to Pluto.

Planetary system

Sol contains eight major planets, two strategically important dwarf planets, extensive asteroid and Kuiper-belt infrastructure, and thousands of orbital facilities. The register below follows increasing orbital distance from the system primary.

The inner system

01

Mercury

SOL I · SURVEILLANCE WORLD

Mercury is a small, barren world whose strategic value comes from its proximity to the Sun. Sensor stations across and above the planet monitor the difficult solar approach vectors an intruder might use to enter the system beneath the Sun’s radiation and electromagnetic noise.

The planet hosts ODIN Node THETA. THETA integrates solar-weather prediction with deep-system tracking, separating natural interference from drive signatures, emissions and gravitational disturbances. Its position makes Mercury the innermost tripwire in Sol’s layered defense.

02

Venus

SOL II · TERRAFORMING RESERVE

Venus remains uninhabited. Red Moon Biologics has attempted to terraform the planet for approximately two centuries, employing atmospheric processing, orbital shades, engineered extremophile ecologies and repeated surface-conditioning programs. No effort has yet produced a stable environment suitable for permanent human settlement.

The continuing failures have made Venus both a warning and a research asset. Red Moon retains control of the active project, while ODIN Node UNICORN maintains surveillance from hardened orbital infrastructure above the planet.

03

Earth

SOL III · HUMAN HOMEWORLD

Earth is the birthplace of humanity and the center of human historical and cultural identity. It remains the Confederation’s de jure capital: the world from which the republic derives its name, constitutional legitimacy and civilizational memory, even though its principal governing institutions now operate from Mars.

Two ODIN sub-minds protect Earth directly. YANKEE and NAPOLEON coordinate planetary and near-orbital defense sectors, integrating fixed weapons, orbital batteries, aerospace forces and the wider strategic network.

Luna

Earth’s only natural satellite is the planet’s primary defensive bulwark and the most heavily armed moon in human space. Thousands of surface-based anti-ship cannon and missile sites are distributed across hardened lunar complexes. A permanent military garrison of approximately 750,000 personnel operates the weapons network, protects the approaches to Earth and supports orbital-defense formations.

ODIN Node ALPHA, the largest of ODIN’s publicly acknowledged sub-minds, is housed within Luna’s defensive architecture. ALPHA coordinates the Earth–Luna battlespace and acts as the principal local command intelligence for the inner defense zone.

To take Earth, Luna must fall first.

Mars

SOL IV · OPERATING CAPITAL

Mars is the de facto political, administrative and military heart of the Confederation. The President, Grand Assembly and senior federal institutions reside and conduct the majority of their business on the planet, while CONSTRACOM directs the Navy from its Martian command infrastructure.

The headquarters and principal Sol facilities of Phoenix Arms Corporation occupy a central place in the planet’s military-industrial economy. Extensive shipyards, orbital works, surface batteries and fortified government districts make Mars a strategic fortress as well as a capital.

ODIN Node OLYMPUS coordinates the planet’s defensive array and the dense traffic surrounding its yards and command stations. Mars is not merely protected by the Sol defense system; it is one of the system’s principal command centers.

Ceres and the asteroid belt

B

Ceres

DWARF PLANET · BELT ADMINISTRATION

Ceres anchors the inhabited and industrial infrastructure of the asteroid belt. Its yards and associated facilities support naval construction, fleet logistics, mineral processing and the movement of traffic between the terrestrial and Jovian regions.

Water is both a natural resource and a managed public system on Ceres. Its hydrology administration governs extraction, purification, reclamation and distribution across sealed habitats and industrial works—a technically demanding civil service whose former administrators include President Felix Rhodes. Three additional Bastion-class hulls are under construction in the Ceres yards as of the 2780 register.

The Jovian system

Jupiter is the largest planet and, after Sol itself, the most massive body in the system. By 2780 its major moons have been terraformed, settled or converted into industrial and military installations. Together they form one of the densest concentrations of strategic infrastructure outside Earth and Mars.

Io

MILITARY INSTALLATION

Io is a dedicated military site operating within Jupiter’s intense radiation and gravitational environment. Hardened installations support the Jovian defense sector and ODIN Node KILLIAN, which monitors traffic through the middle system.

Europa

TERRAFORMED COLONY · POP. 1.5 MILLION

Europa is fully terraformed and permanently settled. Its population of approximately 1.5 million makes it the principal civilian colony among Jupiter’s major moons.

Callisto

CORPORATE INDUSTRIAL SITE

Callisto houses an exotic-materials refining complex administered by Phoenix Arms Corporation. Its output feeds high-performance naval, weapons and aerospace manufacturing throughout Sol.

Ganymede

SPECIAL WARFARE CENTER

Jupiter’s largest moon is home to the Special Forces Citadel, the Navy’s principal training center for Special Forces operators. Its ranges and controlled environments support selection, advanced instruction and combined-arms preparation.

The Saturnian system

Saturn’s upper atmosphere supplies an extensive network of Argus Macrotechnologies habitats specializing in gas extraction, separation and refinement. These orbital installations feed fuel, industrial chemistry and fabrication chains throughout the system.

Titan

INDUSTRIAL COLONY

Titan is a major industrial settlement and the site of a Phoenix Arms weapons foundry. Its production supports both naval requirements and the broader Confederate defense market.

Enceladus

LOGISTICS COLONY

Enceladus serves as a Caliban Stellar Logistics staging center. Warehousing, transfer docks and scheduled cargo operations make the moon a key redistribution point between inner-system consumers and outer-system industry.

The outer system

07

Uranus

SOL VII · OUTER-SYSTEM PICKET

Uranus is an ice giant whose principal public strategic function is surveillance. ODIN Node CELADON extends the defense network into the outer system and monitors approaches that avoid the heavily trafficked Jovian and Saturnian volumes.

08

Neptune

SOL VIII · CONTRA QUARANTINE ZONE

Neptune is the least developed of Sol’s major planets. It remains largely unexplored and unexploited by the standards of the rest of the system. An unusual number of survey probes and unmanned expeditions have been lost while operating near or within the planet.

CONTRA maintains a formal quarantine zone around Neptune and prohibits unauthorized entry. The Administration has not publicly disclosed the basis for the exclusion order, the cause of the probe losses or the nature of any installations operating inside the restricted volume.

NAVIGATION STATUS · ENTRY RESTRICTED BY CONTRA AUTHORITY
P

Pluto

DWARF PLANET · OUTER WARNING LINE

Pluto hosts ODIN Node XERXES, one of the network’s most distant acknowledged sub-minds. XERXES provides long-baseline tracking, warning and communications support at the edge of the system’s regularly defended volume.

ODIN strategic-defense nodes

ODIN is not a single computer or station. It is a distributed defense intelligence composed of named sub-minds, sensor constellations and weapons-control networks spread throughout Sol. Each node can manage its local battlespace while contributing observations and solutions to the wider system.

Published node locations describe the acknowledged command architecture. Weapons platforms, passive sensors, mobile relays and contingency systems are more numerous than the named nodes in this register.

Strategic importance

Sol contains the Confederation’s de jure capital, operating government, senior military command, most symbolically important world and one of its greatest concentrations of naval infrastructure. It is therefore simultaneously a political center, an industrial system and a strategic objective without equal.

The system’s defenses are built in layers. Mercury and Pluto watch the extreme approaches. The outer nodes extend warning through the ice-giant region. Jupiter and Saturn provide military depth, industry and logistics. Mars coordinates the government and Navy. Earth and Luna form the defended cultural center.

This arrangement reflects the central paradox of Sol. Humanity has spread across hundreds of worlds, but the Confederation still derives much of its authority and identity from a single system. Sol is no longer the whole of human civilization. It remains the place human civilization cannot imagine losing.
