BASTION

BCX-1 — FLEET BATTLECRUISER

Rapid Power Projection • Frontline Command • Independent Capital Operations

“What the Confederation sends when it wants something to stop existing.”

The Bastion-class is among the most recognizable capital ships in Confederate service. Its spearhead silhouette, powerful forward battery and exceptional acceleration reflect a doctrine that asks one vessel to arrive quickly, command decisively and continue operating when ordinary fleet support is distant.

Role and doctrine

A Bastion is designed for rapid power projection, frontline command and long-duration independent operations. The class can lead a task force, break a fortified approach or operate as a mobile forward base while smaller vessels rotate for stores and repair.

Its defining maneuver is the Slingshot Run. A Bastion aligns its heavily armored bow with a selected target, commits its full drive array to a high-velocity attack vector and fires through the approach. The tactic combines speed, forward protection and concentrated weapons fire into a brief engagement window that is exceptionally difficult for another capital ship to answer.

“A Bastion does not ask the battlespace to accommodate it. It chooses a line, creates a problem and requires everyone else to react.”

The class uses variable-density armor: its greatest protection is concentrated across the forward spearhead and citadel, while lighter lateral and aft structures reduce mass. The arrangement gives the Bastion battleship-grade endurance on its intended attack axis without sacrificing the acceleration central to its doctrine.

Weapons and endurance

A spinal Mark XV Solfire plasma projector forms the centerline of the Bastion's offensive system. The weapon is fixed forward; the ship aims it by turning. Heavy mass-driver batteries, vertical-launch cells, capital torpedoes and layered point-defense systems allow the vessel to continue an engagement after the opening attack.

The Bastion's molecular fabrication complex is almost as important as its weapons. With suitable feedstock, shipboard teams can manufacture replacement armor components, munitions and selected strike-craft parts far from a major naval base. This capability reduces—but does not eliminate—the enormous logistical burden of sustaining a capital ship.

“A Sagittarius runs out of ordnance and needs resupply. A Bastion runs out of ordnance and spends the next eight hours making more.”

Ships of public note

SCS Excelsior

The Second Fleet flagship is the best-known active member of the class and the vessel most commonly associated with Vice Admiral Victor Black. Excelsior represents the Bastion's intended role at full scale: a mobile command center with the speed and combat power to shape an entire fleet action.

SCS Invictus

The lead ship of the class remains an active reference hull for tactics, engineering certification and major refit standards.

SCS Thermopylae

A serving Bastion frequently assigned to high-readiness patrol and fleet exercise duties.

SCS Intrepid

Intrepid is under construction in the Phoenix Arms yards near Ceres. Shipmaster General Kong Liao's team is completing the hull in concert with its master-control intelligence, Idalia. Two additional Bastion hulls are also listed in the Ceres construction program.

Registry assessment

The Bastion turns industrial scale into operational independence. Its drives, armor, fabrication plant and weapons do not make logistics disappear; they allow a commander to carry more of those logistics inside the ship and apply them where the Confederation needs force most urgently.

That combination explains the class's place in Confederate strategy. A Bastion is expensive to build, difficult to crew and impossible to mistake. It is also a visible promise that distance alone will not place a threatened system beyond the Navy's reach.
