The Sapience Protocols

Sentient general artificial intelligence is restricted under the Sapience Protocols. These measures followed the Prometheus Incident during the twenty-third century and remain a defining part of the Confederation’s approach to machine intelligence.

The distinction between sentient and non-sentient systems is consequential. The restrictions on general AI do not make all automated or artificial-intelligence systems equivalent under Confederate practice.

Feral AI and GOLEMs

Non-sentient Feral AI is standard military technology. It controls GOLEM drones, which operate in support of infantry forces. Their use demonstrates the continuing place of artificial intelligence within the Confederation’s armed services.

GOLEM systems belong to the non-sentient category. Their role should be distinguished from the restricted general intelligences governed by the Sapience Protocols.

Historical context

The Prometheus Incident predates the current era by several centuries. Its institutional legacy persists alongside the Confederation’s extensive use of advanced technology, from artificial gravity to faster-than-light communication.
